Mobile Internet Users Increasing Tremendously in Pakistan
In the recent years, due to pretty low rates of cellular services, there is an increase in the number of subscribers with an accelerated pace. Furthermore, the subscribers adopting internet services are showing incredible growth of 161 percent by June-end.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority reported, the number of internet subscription on network of different cellular operators have reached 14.4 million by the end of closing financial year 2009-10. The number of internet subscribers on cellular operators’ network was recorded 4.4 million by the end of 2008-09.
Telenor has grabbed the biggest share in terms of number of mobile internet users; however, penetration-wise Zong is leading the market with its lowest cost package of internet services.
Industry analysts said the internet subscription numbers might be over-stated by the authority because the internet users are not permanent in the cellular sector on specific operator’s network. They were of the view that cellular operators’ revenue has seen a healthy increase from the usage of mobile internet on GSM technology.
The quality of handset also facilitates subscribers to use internet, an internet services are used mostly on expensive handset of branded companies. The growth of mobile internet subscribers has outpaced the growth of internet subscribers utilizing broadband and dial-up connections in the outgoing fiscal year.
As per estimated figures, the number of internet users had reached 19.5 million by 2009-10 as compared, with the number of users reported less than 19 million in the country by the end of corresponding previous year.
However, the number of internet connections has reached nearly 10 million in the country including broadband and dial-up. The broadband growth witnessed 150 percent in just two years, which has never been experienced before.
The number of broadband users has grown from 45,000 in 2007 to 900,000 this year. Due to these results, Pakistan has been placed 6th in terms of quarterly growth and 10th in terms of annual growth in the global broadband market by a leading web source on broadband statistics.

ZONG launches SMS Delivery Report at Rs10 per month
ZONG has launched SMS Delivery Report today. Keeping in line with its history of providing distinctive services, ZONG has launched the SMS Delivery Report at a very negligible price and will ensure that the subscriber always receives the report for their SMS.
It’s always important to know whether your SMS has been delivered to the recipient or not. Previously, SMS delivery was given by most operators free of cost but due to the traffic on the messaging system owing to these delivery reports, most of the times the operators would shut down the delivery report service. This would leave subscribers in the dark having no option of knowing whether it is a system glitch or their SMS has not been delivered. Currently operators are revisiting their SMS delivery report situation and developing a charged subscription service for this purpose.
This service will add to the list of value added services being provided to its customers. With this service, customers will get information in real time as soon as the SMS is delivered to the recipient and will be assured of the delivery of their SMS on the destination.
Subscription:
For subscription, subscriber can send “SUB” to 533 for activation of this service
Charges:
The charges for Delivery Report Service are Rs 10+t per month.

Face2Face Launched: a Proximity Location Application for Smartphones
Face2Face is a smartphone application that can integrate your Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, MySpace accounts in one place – to proximately tell you the location of your friends (or friends of friends in case you desire).
Apparently it consolidates all the social networks to enable you to know the location of a friend if he/she is nearby.
Face2Face says that it tells the approximate location to cure privacy issues; however, it does allow you to broadcast your exact coordinates to friends – eventually enabling you to meet them in person; Face 2 Face.
Face2face will offer you to make yourself available to some friends, and not to others, on an individual basis.
Moreover, cross-network ‘friends of friends’ feature can make you meet new people through trusted relationships while ensuring the same benefits of “social selectivity.”
Proximity Idea:
Idea is awesome; it outclasses other location applications by limiting the information about your exact location. Moreover, it gives the control to the user to decide about what contacts to get your location’s information, a feature majority would love to have.
But at the same time, we think face2face wasted an idea by not developing their own (mobile) social network and just by relying on already available social networks.
Just to add, .ws domain is not that pretty for an application like face2face.
Compatibility:
Face2face works with most smartphones including BlackBerry, iPhone, Android and even many J2ME (such as Nokia’s) handsets.
Download:
Face2Face was developed by Proximate Global Inc. in Pakistan and the United States, and is launched worldwide.

PTCL to add Digit ’9′ For Karachi, Lahore Numbers
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) has announced that it will add “9″ digit with all public sector telephone numbers for Karachi and Lahore – those starting with 9 digit, with effect from July 01,2010.
For instance, 042-920-4466 will become 042-9920-4466
Earlier, Digit “3” was added to all existing 7 digits numbers of Karachi and Lahore except the numbers starting with “9”.
It is important to understand that extra digits have been added to the existing phone numbers and not the area codes. Army exchanges are exempted from this change and their numbers would remain the same.
For customer with awareness and facilitation for PTCL requested PTA that the new series plan should run parallel to old one for a period of one year w.e.f July 01, 09 till July 01st, 2010. However at the completion of this period to ensure connectivity and customer convenience, customers would now hear an announcement advising them to add digit 3 or 9 to get through on PTCL Karachi and Lahore incase they forget to dial the new required digit.
SEVP Commercial Naveed Saeed said PTCL in this regard also plans to run an awareness campaign to save our customers from any inconvenience and connect them without any problems.
Aasif Inam EVP Consumer Services said this will apply to all callers calling on PTCL landline in Lahore and Karachi from PTCL landline, Mobile, NTC, SCO or other LLOs and we are specially focusing upon publicizing the change to save our customers from facing any inconvenience.
Just a Coincidence or its Pure Love?
Its about two telecom giants and I do not know who is unable to cut mustard. I noted the other day that both Mobilink and Ufone are celebrating FIFA World Cup in their own ways.
Ufone announced Futsal and Mobilink Foosball, which is very good keeping in view the Football fever these days.
However one thing which I could not understand was that the image used by both Mobilink and Ufone were the same except deliberate attempt to change the colour of uniform in both the ads.
Now I am at a loss who copied whom. Why both selected the same image for their promotions? Is there any dearth of images or ideas in our country this practice is not healthy for Telecom operators since it leaves a bad taste in mouth. What is really so disgusting to me was does it really cost an arm and a leg to a Telecom operator that it miserably failed to come up with something quite genuine.
Anyways cutting to the chase I think this practice in Pakistan must be stopped forthwith.

On this occasion Secretary IT, Naguibullah Malik was the guest of honour while Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Dr. Mohammed Yaseen moderated the panel discussions among the participants of the event. Representatives from the IT & telecom industry and academia also participated in the seminar titled “Connecting Pakistan Through 3G Mobile Broadband”. Addressing the seminar, Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa said that the telecom sector of Pakistan has seen unprecedented growth ever since the deregulation of the industry. He said that currently our teledensity stands at 63.5% and we are well on our way to cross the 100 million mobile subscribers mark in the near future. The past two years have also seen broadband growth of 150%, never before experienced, he added. The Minister said that the recent auction results of 3G spectrum, in India, ending at US$ 15 billion is a sign of bullish mood of investors in introducing latest telecom facilities in this region. He appreciated PTA’s initiative of inviting all stakeholders of the sector at one platform to have a healthy discussion on challenges being faced by the Pakistan’s telecom market for the launch of 3G technology. He said that PTA should arrange such forums in other provincial capitals of the country as well to enlarge the scope of input being received from the all concerned stakeholders. On this occasion, Mr. Naguibullah Malik said that telecom sector of Pakistan has seen an admirable growth during the last five years which is clearly reflected by the sharp rise in teledensity from a meager 12% to 63% since 2005. He said that before the deregulation we could only guess benefits of telecom for our people but today we exactly know how it benefits each segment of society and age group. Our job is to ensure cheap and easy availability of modern technology to the people; they will learn how to make best of the services to their advantage, he added. He said that 3G Mobile Broadband will ensure availability of a number of data intensive value added services such as real-time access to medical records, on demand TV, e-education, cloud computing, video calls real-time weather forecasts and advisory for farmers and many more. While chairing the panel discussions Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammad Yaseen said that 3G can act as catalyst in the proliferation of broadband and it can bring positive growth in all segments of the national economy. He asked mobile operators to give serious consideration to the early launch of 3G technology in Pakistan so that the consumers can avail latest telecom and data services. Senior Director Global Business Development Qualcomm, Raheel Kamal also talked on the occasion.
